Trip Report – Hyatt Regency Tokyo

by Adam

I think just about every blogger has reviewed the uber luxurious Park Hyatt Tokyo, but what about the Hyatt Regency Tokyo just a short five minute walk down the street? If using points, the Regency is only a category 3 property while the Park Hyatt is a category 7 hotel.  Now, just to be clear there is no comparison, the Park Hyatt will impress you and even if you are staying at the Regency you should definitely take a trip over to the New York Bar at the Park Hyatt. However, the Hyatt Regency is a really nice hotel in the same location (Shinjuku) and can save you lots of points and $…

This is part three of a six part trip report from my travels to Japan:

The lobby and check-in – As a Diamond member I was upgraded to a Regency Club room, no suites were available (and I checked online…though that’s usually more of an SPG problem) and the hotel was basically sold out.

The room… great views of the skyline and park below, modern amenities, bedside controls for the blackout curtains and lights, and lots of convenient outlets. Oh and the bed was very comfortable!

OK – what you are looking at is a mini wireless router. The hotel has no wifi, but they provide these small wireless routers to create your own connection in your room. It’s a bit inconvenient at first (waiting for someone to bring it up to your room and then setting it up), though once set up the signal is fantastic as its your own private wifi network!

The lounge (extremely large with multiple rooms and seating areas) had a really nice breakfast in the morning and appetizers and cocktails in the evenings… The service was as one would expect in an Asian hotel, extremely attentive and helpful.  PS – I love salads in the morning in Asia!

There’s a complimentary shuttle service to and from Shinjuku station which is great for simply getting closer to the restaurants, shops, malls and pubs that surround the station or for catching local or long distance transport. The hotel also offers complimentary shoe shine. Laundry is for a fee, but I absolutely love how each item is individually wrapped at many hotels in Japan.

Look at those amazing views of Mt. Fuji on a clear day from my room.

With great service, a central Shinjuku location, an amazingly comfortable bed, and a great lounge, I’d certainly recommend the Hyatt Regency. …Especially with points rates of 12,000 per night and pay rates that are normally much lower than other luxury hotels in the area.

Up next, a review of the Hilton Tokyo located just across the street.

The atrium suite is definitely worth the upgrade if it is available. The name made me think it would be something out of the 80’s but it is very modern and spacious. Mine had two full sized beds (I think this goes for all of their atrium suites). I was at this hotel in late April and the lounge served chicken fingers one night. There is also a 7-11 below the hotel.

I’m so glad you reviewed this! I plan to stay here in 2015. It is definitely nicer than I imagined!

@ang – No problem. yes, it tends to have just a so-so reputation but it’s actually quite nice.

I was just there in April and stayed 5 nights. It is a very nice hotel and definitely a great use of points! I got an upgrade even though I had no status at the time. The airport limousine bus is convinient. The hotel is an easy 10 min stroll to Shinjuku station and the subway station below the hotel makes it easy to navigate all over Tokyo. I would definitely stay here again if I ever return.

If you request wireless internet in advance, they can usually have the router available in your room upon check-in.

The boneless chicken (karaage) is my favorite item in the lounge, glad you also got to experience it!

for Tokyo, I think this is a very spacious hotel and why spend all those points for category 7 if you can get a nice and simple one in category 3, its not like category 3 is a dump. Nice review.

Hi, I’m interested in staying at this hotel for my Japan trip next year and I’m curious, what room were you upgraded to? This room looks really awesome, love the view of Mt. Fuji from the room!

I love your post. I am considering this hotel for my solo trip to Tokyo in May. In your opinion is this hotel in a good location for trains locally? How did you get from airport to this hotel? I am supposed to fly into Narita. Thank you! Lisa
