American will begin testing new charcoal gray (with accent color) uniforms later this month for both American and US Airways employees according to The Dallas Morning News. The test will include 500 employees who will be tasked with providing feedback on the designs. Final designs will be unveiled in the fall and roll out to flight attendants, pilots, and customer service agents some time in 2016.
If the picture below is accurate, I think Delta’s current uniforms (though they are updating them once again) will still be the nicest among the US legacy carriers. The AA designs would certainly top United’s new uniforms in terms of style though – United’s New Uniforms for Merged Carrier Live Today – Boring & Bland…

I think these still look boring and lacking in any style. Just like all US carriers’ uniforms. The European, Asian, and ME carriers seem to have us beat in almost every aspect of air travel, to include fashionable uniforms.
Also, and I can’t be the only one that’s ever noticed, but there’s very little uniformity in US carriers’ cabin crew uniforms. Even looking at the above, you see three female uniforms, three male uniforms, and two pilots. The in-flight attire is even more varied once the FAs begin to work, subsequently removing or adding garments to their liking.
On my last United flight I counted five different variations on the female crew. Often it revolved around skirt-versus-slacks, cardigan or no cardigan, vest or cardigan, neckerchief or not, etc. The carriers need to enforce some modicum of decorum among the cabin crew and enforce a single standard…they already look slovenly compared to foreign carriers. The least they could do is at least pretend to provide the appearance of professionalism.
