Questions to Never Ask Your Hotel Staff…according to hotel staff

by Adam

If you’re an elite member of a hotel loyalty program, many of the “most annoying guest questions” listed by hotel workers from all over the country aren’t ones you would likely ask, but the select few below may still be relevant. Check out the full list from Thrillist here:

“Why is there an adult movie on my bill?” – Oh, I’m sorry, the porn gnomes must have snuck into your room while you were out and watched 14 minutes of Barely Legal Summer Camp — Volume 12. We’ve been having a serious problem with that lately. Feel free to mention it on TripAdvisor.

“Why do I have to pay for a rollaway?” – Because you don’t gotta pay for the eight people you’re clearly harboring in a four-person room. Yes, we’re watching you, so we can do this the easy way or the hard way.

“This isn’t a resort. Why am I paying a resort tax?” – Unfortunately, this state’s definition of “resort” doesn’t include a daily appearance by a giant mouse or a late-night “discotheque.” They’re tacking on an extra four bucks a night to raise money for a local pro sports stadium you’ll never use. Will that be Visa or Amex?

“Can you get me a ‘friends and family’ rate?” – The “friends and family” rate is reserved for exactly that: friends and family. I can, however, get you the “freeloading social media acquaintance” rate, which is the nightly published rate plus city tax, resort tax, parking, Wi-Fi, and any adult movie charges.

Yeah, well the gnomes do come in.

I was in France last year and in one hotel somebody messed with my Kindle Fire and was browsing sites I would not visit.

In another, someone swiped almost $100 of stuff from the minibar between the time I checked out and saw my cc statement. I NEVER use the minibar. Thankfully, they reversed the charges when I confronted them on the next visit.

Interesting list, however the late checkout question shouldnt be really on that list or depending on what hotel you stay or on the circumstances.

Because many loaylty programms offer a late checkout, but you actually have to tell the staff and can not take it for granted. But they will do their best to give it to you. Like SPG members can have a checkout as late as 4pm.

If you are not a member and just walked in the first time, this is diffrent. So it really depends on the situation.

As someone who has had a movie I never watched “magically” show up on my bill at checkout, I take issue with #1.

In my case, I only noticed because the staff asked ME if I had watched a movie just 90 minutes before checkout, and when I said no, she immediately removed the charge. Yet another reason why I think so highly of HyattPlace.

Gotta say issue with movie rental also. Only had it one time but I was charged $3.95 for a movie I know I did not rent at the old Wyndham in Chicago. Even the front desk was surprised because they didn’t have any movies at $3.95, new release stuff was much more so I know my 10yr old didn’t accidentally rent a kids movie either. I always give the bill a quick glance before check out now.
