Double Dipping w/ AA 10% Citi & Barclays Cardholder Rebate…not so much!

by Adam

I recently redeemed 37,500 AAdvantage miles for an award with AA. I have both the legacy US Airways Barclays card as well as a Citi AAdvantage card. I figured only one card would apply the 10% redemption rebate on the award, so I was surprised when I browsed to my recent account activity and saw two separate transactions noting a 10% rebate!

Unfortunately, upon closer inspection, I realized that the bonus had been split between the two cards…1,875 on each for a total of 3,750 miles or the full 10% rebate.

If you haven’t yet merged your accounts, this may be a reason to keep them separate. You’ll be able to maximize the 10,000 AAdvantage miles per calendar year redemption limit on each account.

Mine was split between 4 cards – weirdly, instead of each being 2500 miles, it was split as 1875/1875/3125/3125 for the full 10k.

i was pleasantly surprised to see it split in this manner. My assumption is that it will continue to be split in this manner until you have received the full 10,000 mile rebate from each card meaning you will get a total of 20,000 miles back after redeeming 200,000 miles. Is there any evidence to the contrary or any evidence that it will be capped at 10,000 miles rebate even with both cards?

When do you receive the 10% redemption rebate? I redeemed 60k AA miles in March for a flight this October. At the time I held both the Barclaycard US Airways and the Citi AAdvantage Exec cards. By October, however, I will have cancelled both and won’t have any AAdvantage related credit cards. Am I out of luck on the rebate?

I’m guessing they will allow the bonus for $20,000 of spending now, since the bonus is being covered by two different accounts.

Sorry, I meant allow the bonus of up to 20,000 miles returned.
