1,500 – 2,000 Easy Ultimate Rewards Points at OfficeMax

by Michael

Until August 8th, 2015, Office Max is offering $15 off $300+ in MasterCard gift cards.  As originally reported by Miles to Memories, this has not been advertised online, but there are signs present in most OfficeMax stores to that effect.

The key to this deal is using a card that gives 5 points per dollar at office supply stores, like the Chase Ink Plus or Ink Bold.

Alternatively, you could also use the American Express SimplyCash Business card and get 5% cash back on these purchases. You can also accelerate that even further by tweeting #AmexOfficeDepot and registering to get $10 off of a $50+ purchase at Office Max and Office Depot with your linked American Express card.

You will save the $15 instantly when you check out. If you were to buy two $200 MasterCard gift cards, you’ll pay $13.90 in fees, and after the discount your total would be $398.90 for $400 and 2,000 Ultimate Rewards points (or paying $378.95 with SimplyCash). If you buy one $200 gift card and one $100 gift card you’ll pay $12.90 in fees, and after the discount your total would be $297.90 for $300 and 1,500 UR points (or paying $283 with SimplyCash). This is a great negative cost opportunity to rack up some easy points or save more than 5% on some regular expenses.

These cards are easy to liquidate at Target with RedBird or online or at WalMart with Serve. Or you can use them for daily expenses and make “five points per dollar everywhere.”

This promotion runs until August 8th, but the $100 and $200 MasterCard gift cards may not last long, so head on out to your local OfficeMax today if you want to check out this deal!

How do you liquidate these online?

The easiest way is to use them to buy things online. But as far as direct liquidation, with the AmEx Serve card you used to be able to add up to a max of $1,000 per month (with a daily max of $200) directly online through the web site with a debit card. I did this monthly for nearly a year. However, I no longer hold the Serve card, as I switched to RedBird to be able to load up to $5,000 per month at Target, and you are only allowed to hold one card at a time personally. So if the Serve rules have changed, someone please speak up!

Are Office Max and Office Depot now officially one store? Is this offer good at Office Depot locations also or only stores branded as Office Max?

I think they are separate stores but under one umbrella. For instance, the MasterCard deal seems to only be available at Office Max stores, however, the AmEx offer ($10 off $50) specifically notes that it will work at either Office Depot OR Office Max. So while you will have to find an Office Max for the gift cards, the AmEx offer will work there for you, as well.

I have the same question. It is not clear if an Office Max = Office Depot for this deal. Luckily the Office Max is closer to my house so not a problem for me but would be good to know.
