ANA to Buy 3 A380s, First Order for the Aircraft in 3 Years

by Adam

ANA is set to acquire their first A380s in a pending deal with Airbus as reported by The Street. The deal for three of the jets will be the first A380 order in nearly three years. It seems that ANA was dragged into the order as part of the restructuring deal for Skymark Airlines (which ANA owns 16.5%), the bankrupt carrier had previously placed an order for 6 A380s. ANA plans to use the jets on their Tokyo-Hawaii flights.

Three jets will amount to only one month’s worth of work on the A380 production line as jumbos continue to struggle in the twin-engine dominant market.

The theory behind the A380 was that an oversized four-engine jumbo jet, capable of carrying 500 passengers or more, could help to resolve the problem of limited access at congested global airports . “Think back 20 years,” Teal aerospace consultant Richard Aboulafia said. “No one crossed the Pacific with twinjets, and there were lots of markets you couldn’t fly to. The world [included] the Airbus planning department that didn’t think too much about the future.” A contrarian theory pursued by Boeing was that smaller. two-engine longhaul jets could overfly hubs and could take advantage of the trend toward liberalized aviation treaties around the world — which is exactly what happened.

Now hold on just a minute Adam. There are NO new orders for the A380. These three A380’s are part of the original Skymark order of six that have been completed minus the interiors. Since Airbus was a major creditor of Skymark, ANA was forced to accept the three A380’s in order for ANA to get approval to purchase the assets of Skymark.

Looking ahead, I would say that the 20 plane order from Amedeo will cancel as they still have no takers for their A380’s. As long as Delta owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic, you can bet those six A380’s will cancel too.

@Steve – Yep, that’s all stated in the post. These are not really new orders, but I’m told Airbus PR will be spinning them as such
