American to Introduce 5th Business Class Seat Variation – “Best Yet” for 777s, 787s, & A350s

American will introduce a brand new business class seat for the remainder of their B777-200s as well as B787-9s and A350s as per Brian Sumers, a correspondent for Aviation Week and a Condé Nast Traveler contributor. This will be the 5th business class variation for the airline since they introduced their Cathay like 777-300ER herringbone seat in 2013. The reason for the additional design is due to delivery and production delays at Zodiac, the seat manufacturer. Zodiac delays are impacting several carriers (see – Cathay Pacific’s A350 w/ New Business Class Delayed past Feb).

American officials told Brian the seat will be “even better than we see today” and that American hopes to have lie-flat seats rolled out across their widebody fleet by the end of 2017.

  1. Actually counting their A321 transcons this would be their sixth variant of fully-flat business class seating. And that’s not counting the non-flat business class seats they still have out there. Product consistency doesn’t seem to be a thing for AA.

A330 – Pre-merger U.S. Airways, early version of the Zodiac seat
    767 – Vantage
    777-300ER – Zodiac, like Cathay
    787 and 777-200 – Forward- and rear-facing
    A321 transcon – B/E Diamond
