Wifi Hotspot Name Causes 2 Hour Delay – “Mobile Detonation Device”

by Adam

Two weeks ago a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Perth was delayed for two hours after a passenger noted a wifi hotspot on her device titled “mobile detonation device”. She informed a flight attendant who alerted the captain. He made an announcement asking passengers to let a crew member know if the hotspot was theirs and the plane would not be departing until it was brought to the captain.

The origin of the hotspot was never identified (of course the name could have come from a device in the terminal), but the plane was eventually cleared for take-off, though without all passengers. Multiple travelers elected to disembark the aircraft.

Qantas issued the following statement:

“A passenger raised a concern during boarding which was looked into by our crew and security team. They found no safety or security risk to the aircraft, some passengers elected not to travel so there was a delay as bags were taken off and those passengers disembarked.”
