Uber to Track Drivers Who Brake Too Hard and Drive Too Fast

by Adam

Uber is going to track drivers using smartphone senors in order to discourage speeding and slamming on the brakes. The company said on Wednesday that they are currently testing the new software in multiple markets before a nationwide roll-out later this year. The sensors in each driver’s phone will track acceleration and braking and drivers will then be provided a daily report with their performance. The hope is to increase safety for all passengers and the analysis will even note drivers who are holding phones while driving. Truck companies and fleet operators collect similar information.

What will the data be used for long-term?

For now, Uber says it isn’t using the new safety program to penalize drivers — or even to reward good driving habits — although the software measures some of the same behaviors that the company says are often cited by passengers when they give drivers a low rating.
