Yesterday morning, Alaska Airlines Flight 7 was traveling from New York City (JFK) to Seattle (SEA). Unfortunately, passengers only made it to Minneapolis (MSP) before an emergency landing was made.

KIRO7 in Seattle spoke with passengers who were on board with the passenger and reported that the man was acting in a strange manner while they were boarding the flight. Apparently, the flight crew had said they were “dropping off one of our passengers early [as he was] having a difficult time working and playing well with others.”
It does not appear that the man was acting aggressively, and passengers reported feeling “sorry” for him, rather than fearful. Alaska Airlines confirmed the wild incident and stated that they “did receive reports that this passenger attempted to access a door at the rear of the aircraft. The passenger was unsuccessful as it is physically impossible to open an aircraft door while the aircraft is pressurized and in flight.”

You know, for whatever reason, I never thought about the physics involved with opening the door while pressurized and in flight. I think this is the first time I realized it’s impossible to open those doors mid-air.
Sounds like he was having a personal crisis – I hope he gets the help he needs.
