Icelandair’s AWESOME Stopover Buddy Program is Back!

by Enoch

Earlier this year, Icelandair launched their “Stopover Buddy” program. It pairs you with an Icelandair employee, who will show you around Iceland for one day. The service is free, with no gratuity expected, and was available to anyone who is flying Icelandair. It’s a creative way to encourage people not only to fly Icelandair, but also take advantage of the free stopover that comes with trans-atlantic flights.

The program ended in April, but Icelandair is bringing it back. This time around, they have amped it up even further, with the “Celebration Stopover Buddy Service.” This is how Icelandair describes it:

Our Stopover Buddies not only know the lay of the land but they also know other interesting locals. That means they are just the right people to help you turn your Icelandair Stopover into a fun and memorable celebration. This winter, pop open the champagne, put on your party hat and request an Icelandair employee to help you celebrate the way Icelanders do. From birthdays, to proposals, our Buddies have it covered. Alternatively, join in on local, Icelandic celebrations and allow our Buddies to show you how to make a good trip even better – Icelandair style.

So not only will your stopover buddy show you around, but can even act as a friend to help you plan a celebration! Personally, I love connecting with locals when I visit a city. Having someone show me around for a day is fantastic enough, but being able to put together something extra memorable is truly remarkable.

Icelandair has also expanded the window of availability. You will have to book a transatlantic flight with Icelandair, and include a stopover on your trip. Buddy trips will be available between October 11, 2016, and March 31, 2017, and scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis. This service itself is free of charge, but you’ll have to pay for any activities, food, or accommodations, which you’d do if you were traveling alone anyway. There are additional terms and conditions, which you can check out here.

Iceland is an increasingly popular destination, and I absolutely loved it every time I was there. It’s great to see Icelandair offering this program once again!
