Limited Time: Pay Rent or Mortgage with a Credit Card for a 1.75% Fee via Plastiq

by Enoch

Following RadPad’s announcement that they will no longer process rent payments with a credit card, Plastiq is offering a limited time offer. When you schedule 6 or more rent or mortgage payment, they will reduce the credit card fee they usually charge.

Plastiq will process your credit card payment and send a check on your behalf

Plastiq will process your credit card payment and send a check on your behalf

Instead of their usual fee, you will pay:

  • 2% 1.75% with MasterCard payments
  • 2.5% 2.25% with American Express payments

Visa payments will continue to be charged a 2.5% fee. To take advantage of this offer, you must:

  • Schedule 6 or more payments, as far into the future as you’d like.
  • Make sure those payments are for rent or mortgage
  • Use your MasterCard or American Express card
  • Do it before October 31, 2016, 11:59 p.m. PT

You will have to select “Set Payment Schedule” instead of “Review and Pay Now.” There is no maximum to the number of payments you make, and other than your credit card’s expiration date, there is no limit on date, as long as you schedule the payments before October 31.

Plastiq is a great and easy way to meet minimum spending on credit cards. For the rewards you usually get from sign-up bonuses, the 1.75 – 2.5% fee can be more than worth it. Under this promotion, however, if you have a 2% cash back MasterCard, like the Citi DoubleCash, you can actually come out ahead!

If you’re looking to check out Plastiq, you can sign up here to earn 200 fee-free dollars after your first payment of $20 or more. I will earn a referral bonus as well; you don’t have to sign-up with my link, but I’m grateful if you do. If you are a current Plastiq user, feel free to post your referral link below.

Hi everyone, I just have a few questions. First off, how does plastiq know whether or not the payment is for rent? Secondly, if I schedule 6 payments to meet the requirement to benefit from the reduced fee, does it bill all 6 at once or monthly? And lastly, if each rent payment is, let’s say $1500, plastiq will bill my card $1526? Is that how that works?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks.

Hi Cody!

(1) You select the category of payment when you schedule them. Plastiq is pretty strict with verifications, just because there are people who use Plastic in illegal ways (e.g. launder money); some folks have reported being asked to send a copy of the lease when something seems fishy, but as long as you’re honest you won’t have an issue at all.

(2) It will bill at the your scheduled time—say if you schedule a payment to go out on November 15, your credit card will be charged that day.

(3) On your credit card statement, you will see two separate charges. One for the exact amount that goes to your landlord, and a separate charge for just the service charge. So if your rent payment is $1500 and you use a MasterCard, under this promotion, you will see a charge for $1500 and another for $26.25.

Hope that helps! You can sign up here if interested.

Thanks for the info. That does help a lot. One more thing, how long does it take the biller to receive the check if you choose that payment option? In your example, you chose November 15. Are we talking 5 business days? I read the site and says in 24 hours the check will be sent but doesn’t really go into detail how quickly the payments are generally received. Any insight?

In my experience, you will get an estimate when you make or schedule the payment. The reason they don’t have a blanket delivery window for everyone is that some recipients, like banks (for mortgage) or landlords with a larger operation, can receive direct deposit from Plastiq, which takes less time. However, if Plastiq is mailing a check, it may take 5 – 7 business days. Plastiq will provide you a quote of how long it will take when you schedule/try to schedule a payment, and the payment is guaranteed to arrive on time, according to that quote.

Ok last question I promise! I realize the payments have to be scheduled prior to the 31st to get the discounted fee % but does the first payment have to be made before then? Or just scheduled but the first payment can be whenever?

The terms suggest that you can schedule them as far into the future as you’d like.

Which card is best for such promotions? Citi double Cashback or Arrival plus?

[…] In the meantime, it looks like MasterCard and American Express payments are not affected. This means you can still take advantage of the reduced fee promotion. […]
