by Enoch

Just exactly a week ago British Airways announced the launch of the London – New Orleans route, a “reboot” after ending the service 34 years ago. Today, British Airways announced that they starting yet another US destination. Beginning July 6, 2017, British Airways will fly between Fort Lauderdale and London-Gatwick.

The flight will be offered three times a week year round, and four times a week during peak summer travel periods. Schedule as follows:

  • BA 2169: London Gatwick (LGW) – Ft. Lauderdale (FLL), 0925/1345
  • BA 2168: Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) – London Gatwick (LGW), 1700/0630+1

The flight will be operated by a three-class 777-200, without a First Class cabin. There will be 48 Club World (Business Class) seats, 24 World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) seats, and 203 World Traveller (Economy) seats. On the 777, British Airways offers Business Class in a fairly tight 2-4-2 configuration. It’s not the most spacious product out there, but some people swear by it.

British Airways is releasing 4 Economy seats and 2 Business Class seats per flight. However, British Airways levy heavy fuel surcharges, so it’s usually the “last resort” when it comes to booking award tickets to Europe. On this route, you will pay ~$290 in taxes and surcharges each way if you redeem for a coach award. Business Class will set you back ~$420 each way Still, if you are interested, here is what it will cost in American Airlines miles or British Airways Avios.

  • Economy: 30,000 AA miles or 25,000/16,250 BA Avios (peak/off peak) one-way
  • Business: 57,500 AA miles or 75,000/62,500 BA Avios (peak/off peak) one-way

This will be British Airways’ 24th destination to the US, and 4th destination to Florida alone; they already operate flights to Orlando (MCO), Tampa (TPA), and Miami (MIA). Ft. Lauderdale is seeing quite a bit of expansion in terms of international flights; Emirates just announced the launch of non-stop flights to Dubai a few weeks ago.
