LGA Big Changes Today – Delta Kicks Out American & Relocates Shuttle, JetBlue & Alaska Take Over Marine Air Terminal

by Adam

For a constant Delta Shuttle traveler from LGA, today is quite a sad day.  As of this morning, the Delta Shuttle now operates from Delta’s Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport, vacating the separate Marine Air Terminal (A) gates.  That terminal had easy access from the Grand Central Parkway and getting to the gate was a breeze (despite the sometimes longer than expected security lines). I’d sometimes arrive less than 20 minutes prior to my scheduled departure. The return back to LGA was amazing too, I could be home to the city in less than 15 minutes from the Marine Air Terminal pick-up area.

The move comes as six airlines – American Airlines, American Shuttle, Delta Shuttle, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Spirit Airlines relocate terminals at LaGuardia Airport. LGA says that “the airline relocation helps to improve the travel experience and accommodate the ongoing redevelopment to build a new unified LaGuardia with better amenities, transportation and overall customer experience.”

The move also removes American from Delta’s home at LGA. American’s Shuttle (the former US Airways Shuttle) moves from Delta’s Terminal C (the former US Airways Terminal) to Terminal B with all other American flights. Delta will now be joined by Frontier and Spirit at Terminals C / D.

The Delta Shuttle can trace its history back to the sale of Eastern Air Lines to Texas Air in February 1986. The airline was forced to divest LGA and DCA landing slots which were sold to Pan Am along with the gates at the Marine Air Terminal. Pan Am Shuttle launched in 1986 with a renovated Marine Air Terminal. Upon filing for bankruptcy in 1991, the shuttle was sold to Delta for $113M. Delta Shuttle launched on September 1, 1991.
