Last year we did a roundup of all travel / aviation April Fool’s jokes over the years, but 2017 definitely had one of our favorites with Ikea’s low-cost carrier launch.
IKEA Australia posted the following news on their Facebook page last yaer:
We’re taking to the skies with the launch of a low-cost airline: FLIKEA!
We’re thrilled to announce plans to launch our own airline in 2019. FLIKEA will be a single-class, low-cost carrier that will travel to may international destinations, and will include the world’s first non-stop flight from Sweden to Australia.
The airline will utilise the five dimensions of Democratic Design unique to IKEA – exceptional form, quality, sustainability, function and price – to reduce aircraft weight and fuel requirements, resulting in a dramatically reduced transit time, lower ticket price, and cutting out the need for any stopovers.

A non-stop flight from Australia to Sweden will be an ultra long-haul one, but that’s not to say it’s technically impossible. After all, Qantas recently completed their non-stop from Perth (PER) to London (LHR), a route that carries a Great Circle distance of just over 9,000 miles. A flight from Perth to Stockholm (ARN) will carry a distance of just 8,357 miles, shorter than between Dallas (DFW) and Sydney (SYD). Of course, we’d also be dealing with other weather considerations.

And I have to wonder: if FLIKEA was real, would you fly on them? I am curious whether sitting in their iconic POÅNG armchair will be more or less comfortable than the traditional airline seats, and would I rather have meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberry juice, or a classic Economy hot meal?
I suppose all of this is beyond the point. Happy April Fools’!

I love the overhead compartments, although the footrests are pretty amazing as well.
Would I need an allen key wrench to board? I’m sure all the seats are flat-packed at the start of every flight.
