Man Completes 20,000 Mile Pub Crawl – 21 Countries – Hits Most Northerly & Southerly Bars in the World

by Adam

A 38-year-old UK man has driven his car across 21 countries, starting at the Arctic Circle and ending at the southernmost tip of Chile seven months later. Ben Coombs started his adventure on the Norwegian island of Svalbard in a mining settlement called Pyramiden. With a population of 4, he found the town’s only bar, located just 700 miles from the North Pole. He ended his trip at what he described as a dive bar in Tierra del Fuego, Chile.

“It’s a bit of a dive actually, we’re talking plastic patio furniture inside, Chilean line dancing on the TV, and a menu which consists only of lager and cheap whisky. There are probably more appealing places to travel 20,000 miles to get to, but that’s not really the point. It’s the journey that matters, not the destination.”

From Pyramiden, he drove his 20-year-old car across Europe to Southampton where it was shipped to New York.  From there he drove across the US to California before heading south to Mexico. The car was then shipped around the Darien gap from Panama to Colombia. All that was left was a 8,000 mile drive across Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina before reaching that final bar!

The BBC has his full trip details here.
