Don’t Miss Out on Amex Bonus Points and Discounts By Forgetting ‘Offers’

by Shelli Stein

A lot of American Express cardholders tend to overlook one of the most reliable benefits of the card: automatic discounts and bonus points on purchases. AMEX Offers can actually provide great value, but many people forget to activate them on the websites. Knowing how to activate and take advantage of AMEX offers can be tricky. Here’s what you need to know.

What Are AMEX Offers?

Amex Offers are pre-qualified offers that are attached to American Express credit cards. And there are lots of reasons to use and love these AMEX Offers! It doesn’t matter if you own a basic Blue Cash Everyday® Card, or the luxurious The Platinum Card® from American Express, there are almost always decent offers, if you can remember to look for them and activate them. Business cards, like the The Business Platinum® Card from American Express  have their own unique offers as well.

Even the American Express Gold Card, with its current Limited Time Only bonus offer of 60,000 Membership Reward Points, comes with unique, great Amex offers!

Some offers might include double points for purchases at certain stores or chains, others might include rebate cash or even flat discounts.

Here’s how AMEX Offers work:

1) Activate the Amex Offers Online

Log into your American Express account and select the card for which you’d like to activate offers (if you have multiple AMEX cards, the various cards will appear at the top of the screen).

Either scroll down to the “AMEX Offers & Benefits” section of the page.

I have my Delta SkyMiles Platinum card selected at the top of the page, and scroll down past Statements and Activity to find Amex Offers and Benefits.

On the right side of each offer you’ll see a box that says Add to Card.

Click and add that offer to your card. You might qualify for an offer on several different American Express cards. You’ll have to separately activate each offer on each individual card.

Be sure to check each of your cards for their offers and add your offers on each card. You and your spouse can both take advantage of the same American Express offer IF you have separate credit cards.

2) Beware of Spend Requirements and Expiration on Your Amex Offers

Pay attention to minimum spends required to satisfy the offer and offer expiration dates. Also pay attention to the location for the offer. In other words, is it an online offer or an in-store offer? You’ll also notice that some offers are for using Membership Reward Points and some offers are to save money on a purchase.

So if you have an offer you’ll only use once but it’s on multiple cards, say a card that accrues Membership Reward Points and a card that accrues SPG points, you’ll have to decide which card to use.

3) Go Shopping!

Use the card you added the offer on to make the required purchase. You can stack your AMEX Offers with other deals and coupon codes. Make sure the charge is before the offer expiration date. Sometimes an offer will expire before you can use it.

In the case of restaurants, for instance, if you can’t get to the restaurant before the offer expires you can always use the offer to buy a gift card for that restaurant and eat there later on.

Final Thoughts

The best use of AMEX Offers is on purchases you plan. As an example, the last few offers I used were at Home Depot, a spa, Hyatt hotels, and restaurants.

From time to time an AMEX Offer may persuade you to try a new product or restaurant. Why not save some money while checking out a new service?
