United Perks Up Onboard Food: Bread Pudding for Breakfast?

by John Harper

United Airlines is upping its buy-on-board food menu starting this month. There will be new snack options, new beers and the option to eat a decadent dessert for breakfast.

Banana bread pudding is now on the United “Bistro on Board” breakfast menu. Economy passengers can order the pudding on 3+ hour flights between North American cities departing from 5 a.m. to 9:44 a.m. Chobani Greek yogurt is used in lieu of heavy cream, according to a news release, meaning this bread pudding is slightly less likely than New Orleans bread pudding to induce chronic obesity in United Premier frequent flyers. Chobani’s head chef was in on the deal. The pudding costs $8.99.

Upgraded buy-on-board meals are a trend of late. Alaska recently revamped its onboard menu. American introduced new special order meals earlier this year, though I’m not entirely clear on the status of that deployment/experiment. Delta is still serving mostly Luvo wraps and the occasional turkey or roast beef sandwich.

If you do order food on United, even occasionally, the 20 percent discount using the United MileagePlus Explorer card is among a list of perks for United flyers. More info here.

Other menu additions include coconut oatmeal with yogurt, shredded coconut and chia seeds coated in strawberry compote, topped with almond coconut granola, and a chorizo breakfast sandwich “with a cage-free fried egg, pork chorizo patty and smoked cheddar cheese on a ciabatta roll.”

What About Lunch and Dinner?

Next month, daytime flyers get the bone. Starting Oct. 1, United will serve a new cheeseburger and a chicken parmesan sandwich between 9:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. .

United’s buy-on-board economy bar also got an upgrade. United is flying Chicago-based Goose Island’s Midway IPA, proudly becoming the first airline to do so.

Blue Point Brewing’s Toasted Lager and an upgraded meat and cheese tray to match round out the changes.

Upshot

United iskeeping up with much of the flock with these changes,  but I must admit they look pretty good. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this makes United first to serve Chia seeds in economy class. Innovation in the air.

I’m not sure how many bread pudding breakfasts I can afford, but I’d certainly give the confection a try.
