Drunk Baggage Handler Falls Asleep in Hold of American Airlines Plane in Kansas City, Wakes Up in Chicago

by Zoe

Drinking on the job is never a great idea, but it’s especially dangerous if you work as an airline baggage handler! A 23-year-old Piedmont Airlines employee learned that lesson while he slept off some heavy Friday night drinking in the baggage hold of an American Airlines 737 early Saturday morning. The plane departed Kansas City International Airport at 5:52am on Saturday and little did he know that he’d be in Chicago 1 hour and 40 minutes later. The handler wasn’t discovered until 7:30am when the plane was parked at the Chicago O’Hare gate .

The baggage handler told Chicago police that he had too much to drink the night before and had fallen asleep.  Charges were not filed and the handler was sent back to Kansas City.  Of course, others have survived flights in baggage hold compartments with average temperatures normally between 60F and 70F.
