Breaking: Airlines Making It Way Easier To Fly To Portugal

by Sarah

I always love it when something like this pops into my inbox: “Exciting New Flight Routes That Will Improve Your 2019 Travel Plans,” read the subject line. My eye immediately caught “Boston to Lisbon, on Delta, starting May 23rd. A few rows down, more flights to Lisbon, all starting this spring. Then, just as I was about to post this, I read that TAP Air Portugal today announced San Francisco as its newest US route.

Airlines Make It Easy To Get To Portugal

What does this mean? It means that airlines recognise that Portugal is one exciting up and coming destination. They’re making it extraordinarily easy to get to Portugal, whether Lisbon, Madeira, or the Azores. With flights on both Delta and TAP Air Portugal, SkyTeam and Star Alliance members can use miles to get to Portugal.

Here are the newest routes, all beginning this summer:

  • Boston to Lisbon, on Delta, beginning May 23, 2019
  • Chicago/O’Hare to Lisbon, on TAP Air Portugal, starts June 1
  • San Francisco to Lisbon, on TAP Air Portugal, starts June 10
  • Washington/Dulles to Lisbon, on TAP Air Portugal, starts June 16

David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue Airways and a major shareholder in TAP, told Globe NewsWire “We have 10 gateways from Brazil to Portugal and believe we can support the same number from the US. [The] expansion to Chicago and Washington, DC reflects what an increasingly popular destination Portugal has become, especially with visitors from the U.S. Our network beyond Lisbon is also growing. We now serve 55 destinations in Europe and 17 in Africa and fully 50 percent of our American passengers are flying us to places beyond Portugal, many making use of our popular Portugal Stopover program.”

These three new flights join already-extensive schedules to Portugal on Delta and TAP Air Portugal. In 2018, Delta announced new seasonal flights between New York’s JFK and Ponte Delgada, Azores and Atlanta to Lisbon. Delta also turned its seasonal JFK to Lisbon into a year-round service, which reopened May 2018. (A search for Atlanta to Lisbon, round trip, for summer 2019 did not yield any nonstop results through Delta, however.)
