Wow. United has announced its intention to launch new nonstop service between New York/Newark (EWR) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT).
The flight is subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation, but this would make for an incredibly convenient flight to a beautiful city. Both South African Airways (from New York-JFK) and Delta (from Atlanta) offer a nonstop service to Johannesburg, which is more targeted towards business travelers.
However, there are no airlines currently from the U.S. that have a service to Cape Town. While there will be some business travel, United’s push here is aimed more towards the leisure market with Cape Town a booming tourist destination.
United plans to operate nonstop three-times weekly flights to Cape Town starting in December 2019.
“We are always looking at ways to expand our industry-leading international route network to offer our customers more convenient options. We’re thrilled to announce the addition of Africa to our global route offering,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network. “This new flight will provide customers with the only nonstop service between the United States and Cape Town.”
If approved, United’s service between Newark and Cape Town will be operated with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft featuring 48 seats in United Polaris business class, 88 seats in United Economy Plus and 116 seats in United Economy.
United likely won’t have new Polaris seats for this flight.
Flight schedule beginning December 15, 2019:
- Departing Newark (EWR) at 8:30pm and arriving to Cape Town (CPT) at 6:00pm (+1)
- Departing Cape Town (CPT) at 8:50pm and arriving to Newark (EWR) at 5:45am (+1)
