While starting off solely as a homesharing service, Airbnb has expanded its core business way beyond that by using its platform to sell experiences, hotel stays, and even creating original content with its own shows.
Now, Airbnb’s latest endeavor in New York City will be indeed one of its most hotel-like projects ever. Essentially, Airbnb is getting into the real estate business by working directly with developers. In this case, Airbnb is working with RXR Realty to convert ten stories of a building located at 75 Rockefeller Center into hotel-like luxury suites.
Upon completion, Airbnb expects 200 luxury suites that will be “individually curated and custom-designed” that will come with a full deck of amenities in the building. Those amenities will include a private social area, a business center, a restaurant, and a bar (…kind of a like a higher-end hotel).
Guests will get easy tech-enabled access to the building (…like a hotel keycard or app access). Rentals will have views of New York City landmarks including Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Empire State Building.
Airbnb says guests will have a dedicated concierge service — with local hosts being the concierge staff.
While the line between hotels and home rentals are becoming blurry, let’s not forget about Marriott. Marriott also wants a piece of the pie. The largest hotel company in the world is looking to get into home rental business in the coming months. According to reports, Marriott will likely allow the ability to earn and redeem points for stays.
The hospitality industry is heating up as two of the biggest players, Airbnb and Marriott, look to do battle.
