AA Offers Platinum Status Offer After Earning No EQMs or EQDs in 2018

by Adam

I had absolutely no revenue flights with American in 2018 and was comfortable not qualifying for 2019 Platinum status. I do have lifetime Gold and that seems sufficient given that I almost always choose another carrier when flying from one of my home NYC airports.

Well, American has reached out with a “special opportunity” for those of us who did not re-qualify for status. The offer presented allows me to buy back my status for $1299, exactly the same price as the 2018 offer and $100 more than the 2017 one. That’s with 0 EQMs and EQDs.

Did you get a similar offer? Perhaps one that’s better or worse based on your business with AA?

Exact same situation here. Zero AA flights this year. I’d be willing to buy back my platinum status for $1.98, no more. It’s worthless on AA.

Agree with RJB. I qualified at Platinum and almost every flight was hell. The offer came for $1895 to buy up to Platinum Pro, which is even more useless than Platinum. I told them if they gave me a complimentary upgrade to EP I might keep spending money on AA this year. BTW, on EQD I more than qualified for EP. So, why exactly would they deny the status given that they had my money without actually having incurred the expense of flying me any further? Or, right, because they are an airline and don’t understand basic accounting and economics.
