Have Your Coffee And Eat It Too? Air New Zealand Launches Edible Cups

by Chris Dong

As a relatively small airline, Air New Zealand has impressively created a handful of unique partnerships for passengers, like astronaut-approved onboard pillows and being able to chomp down on Impossible burgers. With sustainability on the minds of every airline, carriers are looking for ways to not only collaborate with other brands, but also cut down on waste.

Cue Air New Zealand’s latest move — eliminating coffee cups and replacing them with cookies. Yes, cookies. The airline is piloting a unique solution to cut down on single use plastic cups with an edible coffee cup.

Air New Zealand s working with twiice, a small New Zealand-based company that makes edible coffee cups out of vanilla-flavored cookies.

It’s all part of a grand scheme to replace the 44.5 million single use plastic cups across its entire network (14 million of them are coffee cups).

I would hope Air New Zealand has the foresight to still carry some single use cups for those with allergies (to gluten perhaps), and for those that are grossed out by this idea.

While this sounds delicious, I do not want a flight attendant’s bare hands caressing my cookie cup before I eat it, as shown in the press photo above. Once that is sorted and the cup is ensured to not fall apart with hot liquid on my lap, I’m all for this.
