Air New Zealand Has a New, Super Summery Safety Video

by Enoch

Air New Zealand is known for its safety videos, which over the years have featured stars from Anna Faris to Betty White, and from cast members of The Hobbit to Sports Illustrated swimsuit models. Well, it’s summer time in the Southern hemisphere, and Air New Zealand is back with another in-flight safety video, and it’s…really summery.

This new video features Jayden Daniels from the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street, and stars like supermodel Rachel Hunter and Joe Naufahu, who played Khal Moro in the latest season of Game of Thrones.  The video follows Daniels around on a summer “road trip” in New Zealand, set to an upbeat soundtrack. It’s a safety video 4-minute commercial that will probably resonate with many Kiwis, and perhaps draw new tourists to New Zealand.

Many safety videos are no longer exclusively viewed onboard before takeoff; airlines are increasing using them as marketing tools. In some instances, the reverse is even happening; those in the entertainment business are now making safety video as part of their social media outreach. Case in point with Air New Zealand’s new summer safety video: I just watched the entire video, and I didn’t really learn anything new about onboard safety features, but I do know I am now craving ice-cream.

But as I have argued before, safety videos being more entertainment than just a recitation of instructions might not necessary be a bad thing. I think it’s fair to say that many people don’t pay attention to safety demonstrations at all anyway. So if an eye-catching video can bring a few extra sets of eyes to the screen, I think that should count as a positive thing.

What do you think of Air New Zealand’s new summer safety video?
