Recently, American Airlines announced some new routes and service to some popular destinations in Europe. Over the last several days, American has launched its new seasonal service for the popular travel season. I am really excited about some of these routes, and it has also opened the door to some decent award space options.
New Philadelphia Routes
As of this summer through the fall, passengers will have access to non-stop seasonal service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to the following destinations:
- Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL) in Germany (operated on a Boeing 767)
- Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) in Italy (operated on a Boeing 767)
- Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) in Croatia (operated on a Boeing 767)
- Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland (operated on a Boeing 757)

I am seeing decent award space right now for coach and business class awards to Dubrovnik (DBV) and Bologna (BLQ) using AAdvantage miles.
Scattered dates, mostly in August, avoids British Airways and those nasty, expensive fuel charges on long-haul mileage redemptions.
New Chicago Route
American also announced new daily summer seasonal routes between Chicago and:
- Athens International Airport (ATH) in Greece (operated on a Boeing 787)
New Dallas Routes
- Dublin Airport (DUB) (operated on a Boeing 787)
- Munich Airport (MUC) (operated on a Boeing 787)
American Airlines New Flagship Lounge – DFW

New Charlotte Route
There’s also a new daily route (year-round) added to American’s network between Charlotte and:
- Munich Airport (MUC) – (operated on a Airbus A330)
New Phoenix Route
This route also began earlier this year and is scheduled to run year-round:
- London Heathrow Airport (LHR) – (operated on a Boeing 777)

The Upshot
The destinations I am most excited about are Dubrovnik and Athens. Tourism has grown dramatically in Dubrovnik in the past two years. Until recently, it was a hugely under-appreciated destination, sitting alongside the Adriatic Sea across from Italy.
With over a thousand islands and more than 6,000 kilometers of coastline, Croatia offers almost limitless opportunities for those who love the coast. Likewise, there is no shortage of beautiful beaches to enjoy and relax upon.
