British Airways today announced that they will be launching service to New Orleans, after stopping the route 34 years ago. The airport doesn’t currently offer non-stop service to Europe, so this route will be a welcomed addition. (Condor is launching flights to Frankfurt in May 2017). The “new” route will be available Monday, Wednesday, Friday, atnd Saturday.
- BA 225: London (LHR) to New Orleans (MSY), 1540/1940
- BA 224: New Orleans (MSY) to London (LHR), 2120/1200+1
British Airways is using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner for this route, which can accommodate 214 passengers. There will be 154 seats Economy (World Traveller) seats and 25 Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) seats. The Business Class (Club World) cabin will feature 35 seats.
RoutesOnline reports that British Airways used to fly between London-Gatwick to New Orleans, which then continued onto Mexico City. This route was operated by a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, and was offered between 1981 and 1982.
On the award seat availability front, it looks like British Airways is releasing 4 Economy seats and 2 Business Class seats per flight. However, it’s hard to get excited about booking British Airways award seats, because they impose fuel surcharges. On this route, for example, you will pay ~$290 in taxes and surcharges each way if you redeem for a coach award. Business Class will set you back ~$450 each way Still, if you are interested, here is what it will cost in American Airlines miles or British Airways avios.
- Economy: 30,000 AA miles or 25,000 BA Avios one-way
- Business: 57,500 AA miles or 75,000 BA Avios one-way
New Orleans will be British Airways’ 23rd destination in the US.

Yeah but no lounge so if delayed you are stuck on the concourse which is basic. No AA lounge either. No chance of being rerouted either- suggest you stick with Miami, Dallas or Atlanta – if probs crop up you have more chance of getting resolution esp if you haveAA status
