Activate Now: Q2 Chase Freedom 5x Points Categories

by Chris Dong

The top perk of the no-fee Chase Freedom card is the quarterly rotating 5x points bonus. If used as a cashback card, that means 5% back for certain categories, up to $1500 in spend each quarter. Normally, you’d get 1% back. This quarter’s (starting April 1st) 5x bonus categories are groceries and home improvement purchases (think: Home Depot & Lowes).

Starting today, you can now activate the bonus for Chase Freedom’s 5x bonus for Q2. In fact, you must actually go through the steps to activate in order for the bonus to kick in come April 1st. Thankfully, Chase makes it super easy.

Chase Freedom Bonus: 5x Groceries and Home Improvement

Receive five points back for every dollar purchased at grocery stores and home improvement stores from April 1st to June 30th, up to $1500 in spend. Take note that Chase does not include purchases made at Target or Walmart as grocery purchases. This is an unfortunate but a known drawback — consider moving grocery spend elsewhere for the quarter.

Maximizing The Chase Freedom Bonus Benefit

If you just have the Chase Freedom card, then you can redeem each point you earn for one cent cashback. However, if you have the card in conjunction with one of Chase’s premium card products, you can actually convert those points to Ultimate Rewards. You can then use those Ultimate Rewards for Chase’s travel portal, transfer to airline and hotel partners, etc.

These cards accrue Ultimate Rewards points:

Remember, while you can activate starting today, the 5x points for groceries and home improvement start on April 1st.

Don’t have the Chase Freedom? It’s both a great starter no-fee card and one that provides excellent value for these category bonuses.
