What Airport Lounges Are Currently Open In The United States?

by Giovanni

Most lounges closed when demand collapsed and the Coronavirus forced the economy to essentially ground to a halt earlier this year. But travelers are starting to take to the skies again, airlines are moving to more customer-friendly policies, and lounges are starting to reopen with enhanced Coronavirus cleanliness and distancing protocols. So which lounges are open during the Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus Lounge Experience

The lounge experience might not be what you’re used to. Beyond mandated face coverings, almost all lounges have reduced hot food options and other amenities in the interests of reducing touchpoints between staff and customers.

The changes have been for the better in some places. God Save The Points reports that British Airways lounges have improved dramatically in the wake of the Coronavirus. In most cases, though, the virus has meant a reduction in services as operators tighten their belts to cope with the low demand.

Luckily, some lounges have reopened with the big-three US carriers focusing on their key hubs. That’s nice. With the reduced service-levels, you probably don’t want to head to the airport early, but it’s still nice to be able to retreat to a lounge during a connection. So what lounges are open?

(This post will be kept updated throughout the pandemic. Most recent update: November 23, 2020)

American Airlines

American Airlines operates two tiers of lounges: Admirals Clubs located at most of its primary destinations and the Flagship Lounge, intended for international-first class passengers and its most elite frequent flyers. United Airlines

United has two tiers of lounges. The upgraded Polaris business-class lounges remain closed. Most United Clubs are also closed but the airline committed to keeping at least one lounge open at its key hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles.

The lounge at Honolulu has also reopened. That gives United customers a total of 11 open lounges sparsed through the country:

  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) – Terminal 1, near gate B6
  • Denver International Airport (DEN) – Concourse B East, near gate B44
  • Denver International Airport (DEN) – Concourse B East, near gate B32
  • Honolulu International Airport (HNL) – Diamond Head Concourse, above gates G2 and G3
  • Houston International Airport (IAH) – Terminal C, near gate C1
  • Houston International Airport (IAH) – Terminal E, near gate E11

  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)  – Midfield Terminal Concourse C, near gate C17
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)  – Midfield Terminal Concourse D, near gate D8
United Club

United Airlines has the least lounges open during the Coronavirus pandemic with only eight lounges open.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines closed all of its lounges except its Concourse D lounge in Seattle International Airport (SEA) early in the pandemic. But the member-elect of Oneworld has reopened much of its lounge network as of August 1. The following Alaska Lounge locations are now open:

  • Anchorage (ANC) – Concourse C
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Terminal 6
  • Portland Airport (PDX) – Concourse C
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) – North Satellite
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) – Concourse D

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any news quite yet on whether Alaska will be opening its brand new lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). It was slated to open by the end of the year but understandably with the Coronavirus, that timeline will probably not hold. Two locations will remain closed for now: New York JFK and Seattle Concourse C.

The Alaska Lounge

Alaska Airlines has mostly opened its small but well-regarded network of lounges.

Amex Centurion

American Express has reopened Centurion Lounges started reopening select lounges beginning on October 5. Currently, lounges are open at eight airports including the brand-new “flagship” Centurion Lounge at New York JFK:

  • Charlotte International Airport (CLT)
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Houston International Airport (IAH)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) – Terminal 4
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • Phoenix International Airport (PHX)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

No timeline has been announced for the reopening of the following locations:

  • Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
  • Las Vegas International Airport (LAS)
  • New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

The Upshot

Americans are taking to the air again for essential business or to seek out the sun. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of lounges (including most of those partnering with Priority Pass and all the American Express Centurion Lounges) are closed. But if you’re traveling through a major carrier’s hub and have access, you’re likely to find an American Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club, United Club, or Alaska Lounge open.
