Delta Diamond Forced to Sit in Feces, Receives 50K SkyMiles + Bottle of Gin to Clean Himself

A Delta passenger on flight 1949 last Thursday from Atlanta to Miami says he and his fellow passenger smelled something as soon as they took their seats. Upon plugging in his iPhone, he discovered that the smell was feces that was spread all over the floor and the bottom of his seat. He says he alerted the on-board crew who told him they were busy with boarding and that he needed to take his seat. Upon pleading with the crew, he was provided a bottle of gin to clean his hands, feet, and clothing.

“I have no idea why I wasn’t offered something from the bio hazard kit to clean myself up with. Instead I was handed two paper towels and one of those miniature bottles of Bombay Sapphire, a bottle of gin to clean myself with.”

He asked to be re-seated but was told the flight was oversold and that he was free to speak with the gate crew as they were in charge of seating. Before getting off the plane, he attempted to clean the mess.

“I was in the bathroom cleaning feces off of the back of my legs, off of my shoes. I was wearing loafers unfortunately, so the feces was all over my bare ankles. They didn’t give me gloves. I had to take my pants off because it’s on the back of my pants, so feces, at this point, is transferring to my hands, with no kind of sanitizing solution to be able to clean anything with, and only one tiny bottle of gin.”

He then exited the plane and got a Delta manager who apparently sighed at him and told him that he could either get back on the plane in his original seat or miss the flight.

“At the very beginning she sighed, ‘what’s your problem?’ And it was just you know, I had to step back for a moment and say, alright, keep your composer. You do not want to be one of these people you see on the news getting kicked off a plane. Meanwhile, I’m covered in feces..

Upon re-boarding, another crew member apparently told him that they saw the mess upon inspection when they boarded and reported it to the local airport team to clean. She commented that she was surprised that no one had taken care of it and blamed it on the cleaning team. When asked if it was human or animal feces, the flight attendant responded that she had no idea.  He was then provided with a blanket to lay over the mess.

There seems to be major confusion in terms of what / who caused the mess. The passenger claims that the on-board crew said it was a German Shepherd who got ill on the previous flight, the gate agent said that her paperwork indicated that an older man got sick upon landing, and Delta Corporate initially told the passenger that it was a golden retriever puppy.

Upon landing in Miami, Meehan opted for a long Uber ride to Tampa rather than getting back on board another Delta flight. He says the airline ended up offering him a full refund and 50,000 SkyMiles for the incident.

Delta released the following statement:

“On Nov. 1, an aircraft operating flight 1949 from Atlanta to Miami was boarded before cleaning was completed following an incident from a previous flight with an ill service animal. Delta apologizes to customers impacted by the incident and has reached out to make it right, offering a refund and additional compensation. The safety and health of our customers and employees is our top priority, and we are conducting a full investigation while following up with the right teams to prevent this from happening again. Upon landing in Miami, the aircraft was taken out of service to be deep cleaned and disinfected.”
