by Giovanni

A couple of months later we have a lot more details about what cities and carriers will be seeing increased service to Tokyo’s preferred but extremely slot constrained international airport.

Countries With New Haneda Airport Service

If you remember from September, 50 new international slots were made available and designated for nine countries. The slots are split evenly between Japanese and foreign carriers and designated as follows.

  • United States – 24
  • China – 8
  • Russia – 4
  • Australia – 4
  • India – 2
  • Italy – 2
  • Turkey – 2
  • Finland – 2
  • Scandinavia – 2

Over the past few weeks, airlines have begun announcing their plans for the new slots.

The Upshot

Japan Airlines Tokyo Olympics JAL 2020 Aircraft Livery

Flag carrier Japan Airlines, an official sponsor of the 2020 Olympics, is adding flights along with its partners to Haneda Airport. Japan Airlines photo.

This is a big international expansion in capacity. Much of the new Haneda Airport service is replacing capacity to the further-from-Tokyo Narita, but for those actually visiting Tokyo (and not just in transit), the new flights will make travel much more convenient.
