A New Grand Hyatt is Opening in the Bahamas!

by Enoch

Redemption options in the Caribbean can be tough to come by given the lack of chain hotels when compared to other destinations. My family has been taking a points vacation to the Caribbean over Christmas break for the last 12+ years…and we are now just about out of locations using Starwood, Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, and Club Carlson points. Well, for those with a good stash of Hyatt points, the Grand Hyatt Bahamas is scheduled to open in less than a month—on May 1, 2015.

The property will be situated in a new Chinese-funded development project in the Bahamas. It’s a mega resort called Baha Mar and occupies 1000 acres along Cable Beach. The complex offers four luxury hotels, with the Grand Hyatt being one of them. The project looks to be very ambitious with the website touting the resort as “the world’s glamorous, new playground.” The hotel has a state-of-the-art casino that its developers say rival “the ones you find in Las Vegas”.

Anyway, after multiple delays, the resort is finally set to open May 1st, 2015. On the redemption side, Hyatt is putting this hotel under Category 5, which is pretty darn high in my opinion. It looks like no free nights are available in the first three months of opening…unless you are willing to splurge 27,000 points for a Club room. The cash rates are quite high for hotels in the Bahamas, floating at around $300 for the cheapest available room.

This is Hyatt’s first property in the Bahamas and I’m excited to see Hyatt entering the market! You can check out the video posted by Hyatt below (actually they posted it way back in August when they anticipated a December opening).

it’s very strange how resorts are recycled in bahamas. A new one opens and another changes its name. I wonder where on cable beach this one is.

Actually this was a cat4 untilthey shuffled some hotels redemption levels a few months ago. Got my room booked for 15000 but heard may1 opening might not happen. If hotel is not ready by end of may hope they let me rebook at 15k not the 20k it takes now.

Great video, I hadn’t seen this one yet. Unfortunately the property has been further delayed. http://upgrd.com/thetripsherpa/breaking-grand-hyatt-baha-mar-opening-delayed.html
