One (Bonus) Last Flight for the Cathay Pacific 747

by Enoch

I’ve reported extensively on the retirement of Cathay Pacific 747. I grew up with the airplane, and even spent my very first flight on one. Earlier this month, Cathay Pacific flew the passenger 747’s last flight commercially. However, Cathay Pacific is giving Hong Kongers one last chance to say goodbye to passenger 747, by flying it over Victoria Harbor this Saturday.

The flight path even looks like it might come close to where the old Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong was! See that runway that sticks out, close to the third pin from the left?

Just a few days ago, Cathay Pacific flew the last commercial flight from Tokyo-Haneda to Hong Kong. There was quite a bit of fanfare, both at the gate and during the flight. Even one of the engineers who delivered the 747 to Cathay 37 years ago was there, just weeks before he is set to retire.

I’ve said before how significant the 747 is to Hong Kong aviation. For many, it’s a wonderful piece of collective memory. It was the last aircraft that departed the old Kai Tak airport, and the first to arrive at the New Chek Lap Kok airport in 1997. I’m glad that Hong Kongers have a final chance to say goodbye!
