I had almost forgotten that the second Saturday of December marks the annual SantaCon event here in New York, that is until I left my apartment to grab some lunch and was bombarded by Santas, reindeer, elves, snowflakes, and Grinches everywhere!

For those of you unfamiliar with SantaCon, it is “an annual mass gathering of people dressed in Santa Claus costumes parading publicly on streets and in bars in cities around the world. The focus is on spontaneity and creativity, while having a good time and spreading cheer and goodwill.”  Though, in New York it’s really just a gigantic Santa bar crawl that begins with bars in one area of the city and continues throughout the day and early evening hitting different neighborhoods throughout city. Several groups require donations to charities or food donations in exchange for participation on the crawl.

What I didn’t realize is that SantaCon occurs all over the world and actually originated in Copenhagen in 1974. Today, you can participate no matter where you are in the world with events in Austria, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Korea, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, and the UK.

Happy Holidays!!!
