Breaking: Singapore to Restore Non-Stop Flights to NYC & LAX! Regain Longest Flight Title

by Adam

Singapore Airlines said today that delivery of their new A350-900ULRs in 2018 will allow them to restart nonstop flights to New York and Los Angeles! The New York flight will overtake Emirates on Dubai-Panama (scheduled to start in February) to become the longest non-stop flight in the world at 9,3000 miles. Bloomberg received the following email confirmation:

“Our customers have been asking us to re-start nonstop Singapore-U.S. flights,” Singapore Air Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong said in the statement. “We are pleased that Airbus was able to offer the right aircraft to do so in a commercially viable manner.”

The airline also said they would explore additional US destinations at that time. Singapore plans to receive 7 of the A350-900ULRs(ultra-long range) which have a modified fuel system.

Optimized for nonstop flights to the U.S., the two-engine planes will ‎include a modified fuel system to increase fuel-carrying capacity, an increase in maximum take-off weight and other aerodynamic improvements, Airbus said.

United Evaluating Nonstop US - Singapore Flights - Point Me to the Plane December 14, 2015 - 11:04 am

[…] As per Aviation Week, United is considering an ultra-long-haul flight from the US to Singapore.  No details yet as to which cities are in the running, but I’d bet San Francisco is on the shortlist. As per Will Horton, an analyst at CAPA, United is evaluating a potential A350-900ULR sub-fleet to cover the flights. Supposedly, UA also looked into the 787-9, but decided that it would require too large of a seat block on the westbound sector. The A350-900ULR is the same aircraft type that Singapore intends to restart non-stop NYC and LAX flights with in 2018. See – Breaking: Singapore to Restore Non-Stop Flights to NYC & LAX! Emirates Delays Longest Flight in the World, Potential Cancellation? - Point Me to the Plane January 15, 2016 - 9:17 am

[…] Panama City is the airline’s first destination in Central America and will take over the “World’s Longest Flight” title from Qantas’ Dallas-Sydney flight. Emirates says the flight will clock in at 17 hours and 35 minutes when heading west. Boeing 777-200LR aircraft will operate on the route in a 3-class layout –  8 in First, 42 in Business, and 216 in Economy. The route will still be short of the all-time title held by Singapore’s retired Newark-Singapore flights which were scheduled for 18 hours and 50 minutes when heading east. Those flights are now set to return in 2018. […]
