American Express frequently taps celebrities to advertise their credit cards. One of the most memorable ad campaign they’ve run is “Are You a Cardmember,” featuring stars like Beyonce, Tina Fey, and Larry David. The “My Life, My Card” campaign before that featured Ellen DeGeneres, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese, among others. Credit card advertising is fascinating to me, since they are not so much advertising an actual hard product, but rather a way to spend money.
Just to be upfront here, I’m a bit of a Tina Fey fan. I think she’s really funny, and absolutely loved the TV show 30 Rock. For a few years now, Tina Fey has been working for American Express to produce ads for their credit cards. They always make me chuckle, and many of them are pretty relatable.
The partnership has just pushed out 12 new “ads,” or rather short videos with “life tips” such as hosting a dinner party or visiting in-laws. I’m at the point in my life where I can relate to a lot of these situations, and I suspect many others do as well. Not surprisingly, the tips all end with a “you should probably use your American Express EveryDay Card for that purchase.”
