Erin Shields, travel editor for U.S. News and World Report said:

It’s a once in a lifetime vacation, and it’s been in the news recently because of coral bleaching. Travelers need to see it soon because there might not be as much left.

The Great Barrier Reef covers an area of 344,400 square kilometers and includes about 600 continental islands, 3,000 coral reefs and 150 inshore mangrove islands. It is one of 7 natural wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In case you were curious what won top spot in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park was named the top U.S. destination.

Do you agree with the list?

Yeah…no. It’s not.

The reef has experienced extensive bleaching and visiting Australia is like getting raped in the wallet. Scuba diving out there is insanely expensive and even 3 years ago when I wen the reef wasn’t that impressive. Now its condition is much worse.

If anyone wants to see good reefs I’d recommend Thailand or Indonesia instead. Much cheaper and probably more healthy reefs.
