It’s Official – End of an Era & Hub- AA Cancels Bulk of SJU Flights

It’s a sad day in San Juan for American / American Eagle and their employees and passengers. Airline Route is reporting that American has canceled all American Eagle Caribbean flights out of San Juan, leaving only mainland flights to Chicago, Dallas, Miami, and New York as well as one international flight to Caracas. AA will continue serving the majority of these destinations from its hub in Miami. I fondly remember connecting in SJU during the late 90s to several Caribbean flights on our December vacations (mainline as well), though for several years now all connections have been via Miami.

San Juan – Antigua 1 daily
San Juan – Beef Island 4 daily
San Juan – Dominica 1 daily
San Juan – Fort-de-France 1 daily
San Juan – Punta Cana 2 daily
San Juan – Santiago (Dominican Republic) 1 daily
San Juan – Santo Domingo 2 daily
San Juan – St. Croix 2 daily
San Juan – St. Kitts 1 daily
San Juan – St. Thomas 2 daily

  1. Wish I’d gotten a chance to do some of these. Sad. Wonder if LIAT will step up their offerings. Also wonder where these planes will be redeployed to

  2. Not cool – I used to like the DFW-SJU direct flight that was 5 hours to avoid Miami, then take puddle hopper over to island of choice.

  3. @Sam, Jetblue has been steadily building up SJU, and will continue the buildup of its newest “focus city.” However, I fear that e190 / a320 are too big for many of these former eagle routes, and much of the service will not return. However, the lower prices and better service, may be a worthy trade. For now, I think most of the crew / aircraft are based in MCO (and to a lesser extent FLL/JFK) not SJU.
