Back in August I helped Jason in LA book a trip to Australia using his Delta SkyMiles. He flew China Southern’s A380 on the way there via CAN and Virgin Australia back home. When it was announced two weeks ago that Virgin Australia was offering Velocity status credits for award flights through June 30th, I had him sign up for an account so that we could conduct an experiment. Would he receive the elite status credits for his SYD-LAX flight, even-though it was booked via Delta? I was optimistic that it would work since the conditions of the promotion state “members must book and travel on a Virgin Australia marketed and operated flight in class X, P, or Z between 13 January and 30 June 2013.”
As Delta’s awards book into the same inventory classes, I was hopeful he would receive the credit. Well, just 3 days after flying (and having Virgin place his membership number in the itinerary), I received an email from Jason this morning that the status credit has posted! Not entirely valuable if you don’t live in Australia or fly between the US and Australia often, though Virgin’s top tier Platinum elite status comes with some pretty cool benefits, including free HHonors Diamond status. YMMV!
