Did you know that the American Airlines hangar at LaGuardia still has the original AA logos or that the first Admirals Club was created there in 1939? Keith at UTP shares the following with our airport history buffs, be sure to check out Untapped Cities for full details:
American Airlines was actually a key player in the development of LaGuardia Airport and it was here that they created the first airport lounge, The Admirals Club in 1939 inside what is now concourses C and D. It also wasn’t always called The Admirals Club, even though the airline wanted the name. According to American Airlines’ history of the club: Ironically, when the papers were drawn up for the club’s liquor license, a judge refused to grant the name “Admirals Club” on the grounds the public might think it was a facility for Navy admirals only. So the club was initially called the “Flagship Club” until the legal hurdles were overcome.
Have you heard of the skywalk above the terminal building that was a popular tourist attraction? It looks awesome! As per NYC Aviation, the attraction could be accessed for 10 cents admission and raised $150,000 in dimes in the first year alone. Check out their full LGA retrospective here.
