Frozen Replacing Epcot’s Maelstrom, Universal Closing Wet & Wild, Indiana Jones Bar Coming Soon

by Adam

The classic Maelstrom attraction at the Norway Pavilion at Epcot is being replaced by a Frozen themed attraction. Disney this week provided an update on construction for the project which is set to open in 2016:

“Frozen Ever After,” is an adventure fit for the entire family that will take guests through the kingdom of Arendelle. The fantastic Disney storytelling combined with new technology and favorite moments and music from the film will make guests feel like they stepped into the magical world of “Frozen.”

Guests will be transported to the Winter in Summer Celebration where Queen Elsa embraces her magical powers and creates a winter-in-summer day for the entire kingdom. They will also visit Elsa’s Ice Palace and the ice-blue world of the North Mountain along with other locations before returning to the Bay of Arendelle. Of course, favorite “Frozen” characters, including the Snowgies from the animated short “Frozen Fever,” will be part of this new attraction, along with the spectacular sights inspired by the film.

The Norway Pavilion’s exterior will be expanded with many unique Norwegian architectural features and the interior design of the “Royal Sommerhus” will reflect the cultural arts and crafts of Norway, providing a charming setting for guests to meet Elsa and Anna.

Hmmm as commenter Pamela noted “Bring the trolls back back from over the falls please instead incorporating a FICTIONAL land into a pavilion that’s supposed to showcase a REAL country.”

In other Disney news, an Indiana Jones themed restaurant and bar (Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar) is set to open this fall at Downtown Disney.

Ardent fans of the “Indiana Jones” films may recognize Jock Lindsey as Indy’s frequent pilot; he’s also the owner of a pet snake named Reggie – an important detail, trust me on this! In the main room, guests will discover an expansive bar, aviation decor filling the room, vintage travel posters covering the walls and correspondence between Jock, Indy and their fellow adventurers on display. Guests can eat, drink and be merry outside as well, in Jocks’ old steamboat, now in permanent dry dock and aptly named “Reggie;” and in nearby seating on the adjacent deck.

The venue will feature unique cocktails – such as the “Hovito Mojito” with Barsol Quebranta Pisco, fresh lime juice and simple syrup – and small plates such as “Air Pirates Everything Pretzels” with house-made mustard and beer cheese fondue. The design team has gone to great lengths to ensure that every element – from the propeller-based ceiling fans and diving bell “booth” to the “Rolling Boulder Meatballs” on the menu – fits within the storyline.

Finally, Universal has announced that they plan to close Wet ‘n Wild which opened in 1977.

Since its opening in 1977, Wet ‘n Wild Orlando has been a place where guests have created wonderful memories. As America’s first water park, Wet ‘n Wild has been the birthplace of numerous innovations that are now considered a common part of the water park experience.

Today, we are announcing that the park will close permanently on December 31, 2016. However, the groundbreaking spirit that has defined Wet ‘n Wild will continue in the development of Universal’s Volcano Bay, a next-generation water theme park that reimagines what it means to be a water park.

Kinda disappointing to see the Maelstrom go – I have fond memories of it from my very first EPCOT visit and still enjoy the ride. As a 41 year old man I’d feel kinda silly going into a “Frozen” ride! So long as the Norway area keeps the bakery – I always fill up on their delicious baked goods!
