You likely have heard of Uber drivers being arrested for their reckless behavior. But here’s one I’m willing to bet you haven’t heard yet: a 63 year old grandmother was arrested for driving for Uber in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Grandmother Arrested for Driving for Uber
Stephanie Franz is a school bus driver who says that she is regularly drug tested, and fingerprinted and that her background is checked for her daytime bus-driving job and that she’s certified to perform CPR in the event of a passenger emergency. A resident of Deerfield, NH, she decided she didn’t like “sitting at home in the evening,” so she became an Uber driver. An article in Seacoastonline reported:
Uber, however, has not complied with the [Portsmouth’s] new transportation ordinance by registering with the city and providing proof that its drivers have passed background checks and are covered by a commercial insurance policy. City Attorney Robert Sullivan said Monday night that he’s received an application from Uber, but it’s not signed by anyone. Other than that, Sullivan said, Uber has not provided the city with any information.
Franz said she was driving for Uber at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday when she picked up two women at the Portsmouth Brewery. They had booked a ride with her through the Uber app. Shortly after, she said, she was pulled over by police officers in two cruisers “with blue lights all over the place.” She said her two passengers were ordered by police to get out of her car and “they had no other ride.” Franz was cited for violating the city’s transportation ordinance and said she has a Dec. 7 court date. The potential fine is $500, with $1,000 fines for subsequent infractions.
With ongoing crackdowns on ridesharing (and homesharing), I suspect that we will be hearing more cases like this in the future.
