Last month I wrote about an unexpected check for $100 that I had received from American Express. Although there were questions about the legitimacy of said check, thankfully it turned out to be legit. Apparently Amex was not done giving me free money.
Earlier this month I received two letters from Amex, one in connection to my Business Platinum Card and one in connection to my Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express (card and offer expired). The text for both letters is exactly the same and reads as follows:
Dear [MaxPoints],
We’re writing to let you know we are issuing a credit of $20 for the account referenced above. This credit is being issued as a courtesy because you may not have received Card Member offers that were available on similar Cards.
…
There is a phone number you can call if you have any questions. I did and the agent was not able to provide more information than what was provided in the letter.
As was the case with the $100 check, I have no idea why Amex issued these two $20 credits, which I can confirm were issued to both of the aforementioned accounts. When they mention “Card Member offers”, they may be referring to Amex Offers. However, most Amex Offers are targeted, so there is no obligation on Amex’s part to compensate me if I am not targeted for a specific Amex Offer.
In any event, I am ecstatic that Amex continues to send free money my way. However, I have to say I am a little perplexed by this.
Have you received a similar letter and credit from Amex?

I got a random $7.90 check from Amex recently that had something to do with refunding part of the shipping and/or purchase fees on Amex gift cards. Maybe this is somehow related if you bought a bunch of AGCs?
This is why we can’t have nice things!
WTF?! Lay off the gin and juice in the afternoon.
