China Eastern to Expand Fleet to Over 800 Aircraft by 2020 as Delta Picks Shanghai over Tokyo

After Delta’s 3.55% purchase / $450M equity deal for China Eastern last year, the carrier says it is looking to increase its long-haul traffic to the US. China Eastern said that they plan to grow their fleet from 561 aircraft today to 800 by 2020. China Eastern currently codeshares with Delta on over 400 routes.

China Eastern’s president said he is not concerned with overcapacity on US-China routes – “We are optimistic on the growth potential of the China-US market.”

Last month, Airbus and Boeing split a $10B order for 35 wide-body jets as the carrier agreed to purchase 20 A350-900s and 15 B787-9s. The carrier will retire six B767s and 12 A330s by 2020.
