Finally some positive news for economy passengers! KLM Royal Dutch Airlines introduced a new service concept for economy class passengers on longhaul flights.
New Meals on Longhaul Flights
Passengers will receive a bottle of water, refreshing towel, and headphones at the start of every intercontinental flight. On daytime flights departing Amsterdam, passengers will be able to choose from an expanded choice of hot meals. The new service includes a larger salad and dessert. Savory snacks and sweets will be available in the galleys between meal services.
Beginning July 1, the new service concept will debut on flights to nine destinations:
▫Bonaire (via Aruba) (BON)
▫Entebbe (via Kigali) (EBB)
▫Hong Kong (HKG)
▫Rio de Janeiro (GIG)
The service will expand to all intercontinental flights beginning October 28.
One Less Flight Attendant
KLM’s latest collective labor agreement includes a clause for one less crewmember on many intercontinental flights. Part of the rationale for providing a new meal service is to increase efficiency:
By better utilizing the space on meal trays, trolleys can be stocked with more trays, ensuring that passengers are served more quickly. The new service is also more in line with passengers’ wishes, in that the amount of food and drinks served remains the same, while the quality of the service improves.
KLM did not provide further details on how it plans to ‘streamline’ its economy service, but these changes will certainly be welcome for passengers in the back.
