Aviophobia is a term used to describe the fear of flying. Depending on the study, it is estimated that 2.5% – 10% of the population will experience the fear of flying during their lifetime. Personally, I experience more excitement than fear when flying. However, I absolutely sympathize with those who are afraid of flying. Passengers can’t even see the ones who are in control of flying, and I can see how that potentially leads to high anxiety.

While fear of flying may stem from agoraphobia (anxiety in places where there is seemingly no way to get out) or claustrophobia, many cases are also caused by the feeling of not being in control or not understanding what’s happening. SkyGuru is a new app that aims to comfort nervous flyers by providing them with real-time explanation of what’s going on with the plane.
SkyGuru app was developed by Israeli pilot and psychologist Alex Gervash, who also calls himself a “fear of flying treatment specialist.” Targeting the idea that many flyers can get anxious from unfamiliar sounds or unusual aircraft movement, the app provides interactive advice before and throughout the journey. It does this by using the phone’s sensors, along with weather information and turbulence forecasts.

Even though I don’t have a fear of flying, I’d still be interested in checking out the app on my next flight. It seems to provide a lot of information about flying in general, and it might be cool just to see how it all works.
The app is currently selling for an introductory pricing of $6.99, and is only available for iOS at the moment. According to VentureBeats, the cost will increase to $19.99 after September 15. However, it looks like they will also be launching a free version of the app then, where everyone can get a weather briefing, with an option to purchase flight passes.
