Small Plane Lands on Busy Chicago Expressway

Not a text you receive every day.

I received a seemingly unnoteworthy text from NotifyChicago around 3:30 pm today: Lake Shore Drive was closed. A lane closure on this busy Chicago expressway – which runs parallel to Lake Michigan – is hardly newsworthy given the start of Friday afternoon rush hour traffic. It was probably a (car) crash, and hopefully, everyone was okay.

Then, the text above, about CPD (Chicago Police Department) shutting down Lake Shore Drive to “secure and remove the airplane” – what?!

“Negative, we’re unable” to make it to Midway

‘Crash,’ indeed, although thankfully not at all what one would expect when talking about a highway. A small plane carrying two passengers was unable to make it to Chicago’s Midway Airport (MDW) on the city’s southwest side after declaring an emergency. Midway’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) directed the plane to land on a busy expressway next to the lake.

Listen to the audio below. Thankfully, no one was injured in what could have been a tragic incident.
