In addition to its recent wave of targeted email offers, American Airlines is also sending out paper mailers through snail mail giving away free status from now through September. The offer seems to be identical to those sent out through email, but this is the first time that I’ve seen/heard of physical mailers being sent out. I’m not sure if my previously having been EXP and PLT had to do with receiving a targeted offer or if this is more widely targeted. Either way, AAdvantage Platinum through January 2020 for only $1500 EQD and 12,500 butt-in-seat miles is pretty generous and easily attainable; the seventeen (!) 500-mile upgrades is just the cherry on top.
AA has been aggressively courting new elite members and offering periodic status challenges and matches over the past 18 months. It’s no secret that AAdvantage has gone from top of the pack of elite programs to the bottom since integration of the ex-US Airways and ex-American systems has been completed, and it’s not unreasonable to think their elite numbers have not been what the company was hoping for. The rollout of their punitive basic economy product has more likely than not hurt their numbers even more. While the AAdvantage program is far less compelling than what it previously was, there’s no reason not to take advantage of this offer if you’re targeted, and I for one will certainly be shifting some travel back to AA to hit the spend and mileage requirement to get a free year or so of status.
