American Keeps Offering Me Platinum Status, Discounted Further w/ Each Email

by Adam

It seems that I receive an email every few weeks from American with an opportunity to purchase back my Platinum status which expired in February.  The emails started in February and offered Platinum status for $1,199. I’m currently an AAdvantage Lifetime Gold member.

After multiple emails at the $1,199 price point, an April email had this title – “A Special Discount on Platinum Status” and offered a $50 discount on the the purchase, bringing the price down to $1,149

This month I’ve received two emails with an extra $100 discount, pricing the Platinum status upgrade at $1,099.

Of course, as each month passes, that’s one less month of using the status as the expiration date is February 2017. Platinum status for $999 in June?

Status is just not worth it. I’ve got lifetime gold, as well, and find myself on SWA and UA because of nonstop options. It’s liberating to fly on convenience instead of perceived loyalty.

After 10 years as an exec plat, it’s just not worth it to me.

Don’t do it! 🙂

I’ve been getting those, too. Leave it to Doug Parker to invent selling amortized elite status.

AA Platinum this year. Have never been upgraded. (Out of DFW/fly weekly) Only benefit is bonus miles earned and getting to choose MCE seats early. Which is nice, but not worth $1k.
