Avis & Budget have settled a class-action lawsuit in which members of Avis Preferred and Budget Rapid Rez were seeking reimbursement for charges they paid for frequent flyer miles obtained with rentals which they feel were not properly disclosed. Avis and Budget referred to these charges as frequent traveler program surcharges (FTP Surcharges). The settlement covers Avis rentals from July 14, 2005 – June 14, 2012 and Budget rentals from November 27, 2006 – February 17, 2013. Based on the number of rentals you had during that time, you can elect to receive a 10% rental discount for x number of days (based on how much you spent on FTP surcharges, up to 100 days) or a cash settlement up to $129. As I was working in consulting during that time, I know that my total will qualify me for 100 days of a 10% discount or a $129 settlement. The 10% discount code can’t be redeemed with any other offers or discounts…which sort of makes it worthless as you can likely find better discounts outside of the NYC metro area. As such, I’m likely going to elect the cash settlement. Avis & Budget will be providing the settlement administrator with the total $ value of FTP charges linked to your account during that time.
